The show's host, Alicia Keys, welcomed the quartet of Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Obama onto the stage.

Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance on stage at the Grammy Awards, and said she was doing so to support her friend Alicia Keys.

"Music is what we cry to, it's what we march to, it's what we rock to, it's what we make love to", said host Alicia Keys during her opening remarks at the 61st annual Grammy Awards that took place on February 10 at Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Obama's initial comments were interrupted by raucous applause and many in the Staples Center crowd stood. She and her husband, former US President Barack Obama, signed deals for a book apiece with Penguin Random House a month after Obama left office in January 2017. "Music has always been the one place where we can all feel truly free".

The big winners of the night included Album of the Year victor Kacey Musgraves, Cardi B who became the first woman to win the Best Rap Album award as a solo artist. "To invite one another in", Mrs. Obama said.

Folk singer Brandi Carlile, 37, was also among the early winners, taking two Grammys for her Americana music single The Joke and another for her album By the Way, I Forgive You.

The EP eventually reached number 12 on the Billboard Top 200 when taking into account physical album sales, streams and downloads. As well as singing, Villa has also had several minor acting roles as a teenager, appearing on shows such as Heroes and CSI:NY.
