NO CHILL: Twitter Trolls Jennifer Lopez over Motown tribute at GRAMMYs

"I could cry. It's such a good moment", Lopez shared explaining how she grew up listening to Motown hits that her mom used to play when she was a kid. As TooFab noted, not only is Lopez not black but her own music style is nothing like Motown's sound. Nonetheless, Smokey Robinson is one of the icons of Motown, if he is not offended should anyone else be?

Lopez also opened up about her performance on the Grammy red carpet, telling Ryan Seacrest that she wanted to dedicate the performance to her mother.

But considering the barriers that black artists from the Motown era faced to get recognition, the choice seems especially thoughtless. "Any type of music can inspire any type of artist", she told the publication. But viewers thought it was not right for Lopez to be honouring such an important time in black music because, frankly, she isn't black. The actress and singer pulled off impressive costume changes during her performance.

At Saturday's Clive Davis' pre-Grammy gala, Robinson defended Lopez' performance, pointing to the credibility of her youth spent growing up in a Hispanic neighborhood in the Bronx.

"The thing about music is that it inspires all". "You can't tell people what they can and can't do - what they should sing or not sing". You can't tell people what they can and can't do, what they should sing or not sing.

"I don't think anyone who is intelligent is upset", Robinson told Variety before the event. "You gotta do what's in your heart". "I grew up on all those songs and because my mum loved them so much she passed them onto us. We were The Temptations and we [would] just sing with her and I feel it's a dream come true".

Besides Robinson, one person who was most definitely thrilled to see Lopez perform the tribute at the Grammys was her boyfriend, former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.

She said she did it for her mom, who is a huge Motown fan.
