Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema joined an elite list of players with his goal against Ajax in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Ajax thought they had taken the lead 10 minutes later when Nicolás Tagliafico nodded home from close range, but after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) the goal was ruled out for an offside.

Benzema put Real in front when he netted on the hour-mark, but Ajax got the goal their play deserved with 15 minutes remaining as Ziyech side-footed home after a sweeping move.

Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari will have to decide between youth and experience as his side looks to take another step towards a historic fourth consecutive Champions League title on Wednesday. Let's hope we can enjoy him for plenty more games.

Real travel to play Ajax in Holland in their best form of the season after last week drawing away to FC Barcelona in the Camp Nou Stadium in the Copa del Rey and following that up with a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid to lift them to second in the Liga Santander, six points behind FC Barcelona.

"But we carried on well and we had our chances afterwards".

"Only point of criticism is our lack in efficacy".

"Nobody wanted what has happened to us in recent weeks but in other games we were good again". If you make small errors, a team like Real Madrid are merciless and will punish you for that.

As well as the disallowed goal, Tadic hit a post and Ajax were full value for their equaliser scored by Hakim Ziyech.

He joined Chelsea from Napoli last summer, but now has the team sitting 6th in the Premier League table - behind Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City.

"I am very happy with how they all played, they all gave maximum effort, it would have been hard to win without that".
